New creative labs at Assembly Roxy this winter
4 November 2020
With huge thanks to the Scottish Government Performing Arts Venue Relief Fund – we are delighted to be able to invite artists, makers and freelancers into Assembly Roxy to take part in three Labs.
For this tried and tested model we are calling out for applications for each lab to take advantage of the building for one week, to come and play and develop a piece of work or practice. Applications are open to any performance specialism, but we will welcome those with a particular emphasis on comedy (this could include sketch, stand-up or theatre), circus and/or devised work as well as those that are designer led.
Each lab has a budget of £3,000 to support:
- Artist fees
- Materials and equipment
- Documentation and sharing of work
As well as space, participants will have access to the Roxy and our partner Assembly Festival’s in-house team including technical, producing and development advice to support the development of work both during the lab and for its future. The Labs will also support international collaboration and mentoring from producers and performers around the world. Each Lab will conclude with a sharing of some kind, depending on ongoing restrictions and the needs of the project; this might be streamed, documented, invited audience or a hybrid of these.
This call out is for our first lab – which we are looking to take place prior to the end of the year, but dates will be flexible to ensure compliance within Government guidance and to support the successful applicant’s needs. The remaining labs will take place between January to March 2021 and a further call out will follow for those.
Applications are welcome from across Scotland, but those applying should be conscious of local restrictions within Government guidance.
Lab participants will be asked to work with the Roxy to ensure we adhere to health and safety legislation and to work Covid-19 safe. Participants will also be asked to credit Assembly Roxy for support during the development phase of any future work to arise from that developed in the lab.
Hat tip to Tron Theatre, Glasgow for inspiring the model.
To apply just complete our quick application form. We welcome alternative application formats such as a video or via telephone. If you wish to submit your application using a different format call 0131 623 3001 or email [email protected] and we’ll be happy to help. As the team are working on a part-time basis please leave an answerphone message if we’re unable to answer your call and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
We will provide full feedback on every application we receive for each Lab season regardless of the outcome of the application process.
Applications for the first round of Labs have now closed but we’ll be announcing the timeline for round two very soon.
