This year we have added a new accessibility filter to the website in order to make our booking process clearer and so that audiences can easily find shows suitable for their needs. Whilst we are still ironing out the finer details and trying to optimise the usability of this new feature, this comes as part of an ongoing commitment to make Assembly and the wider festival umbrella a Fringe for ALL. There is still work to be done, but part of that work is the conversation itself and by raising the visibility of access needs we simultaneously raise the expectations put upon production companies and festival venues to deliver.

The accessibility filters include signed performances, captioned performances, induction loop, step-free access and relaxed performances. Approximately 5% of the entire program will include relaxed performances and a substantial 169 shows are accessible via step-free access in 21 of our 27 venues. What is a relaxed performance? It actually involves a bit more than you might think. Relaxed performances are designed with autism or anxiety in mind and aim to reduce sensory triggers which may be distressing for some audiences. The house lights are left on and the audience are permitted to move around and come/go as they please.

Nik Whybrew, Operations Director at Assembly Festival says:

Each year Assembly Festival strives to improve the accessibility of our venues, in both the permanent buildings we inhabit and the temporary structures we erect. We are delighted that more shows are putting on relaxed performances and are proud to work with artists on coming up with different ways that shows can be made more accessible.

All of these performances are detailed in full in Euan’s Guide, a resource designed to empower those with disabilites by providing access to focussed accessibility information. In 2018 we were awarded a Level One Access Award from the Fringe Society in partnership with Attitude is Everything. Assembly Festival are more than happy to provide free tickets to our shows for any personal assistants. If you do require a personal assistant ticket for one of our shows, please contact Box Office. Accessibility dogs are also more than welcome across all Assembly Venues. Please do say hello to our friendly Front of House Assistants at the venue if you are arriving for a show and need assistance!

Here at Assembly we acknowledge that there is still work to be done to make more of our venues and performances as accessible as they can be, but hope that by sharing these adjustments to the browsing process we are leaving the door open for feedback, suggestions and room for improvement. We endeavour to operate at a level of transparency that will serve to encourage more vigorous measures taken Fringe-wide to ensure that everyone can enjoy the month’s festivities! Please try out the access filters on the What’s On page and let us know what you think, and if you have any other feedback, comments or suggestions we’d love to hear from you at [email protected]
