Assembly Theatre Festival
Assembly will brand all its theatre shows in 2008 under the title of the Assembly Theatre Festival. During the festival we plan to use this to spur a debate whether in 2009 we and other festival venues should create a new brand, the Edinburgh Theatre Festival. There is an issue on the Fringe that it has become so large that it is impossible to differentiate the scale and quality of work; and whether professional theatre is able to sustain itself in this context. To present professional theatre is expensive and we believe there needs to be a development to raise support so that the festival is able to maintain its position as a place to see the best in the world. We regrettable had to cancel the Aurora Nova programme in 2008 due to financial constraints, but we do believe that work like this should be in Edinburgh and we have to find new ways to fund and promote it.
